Historic Mitchell House

The main house, completed in 1916, still showcases original features like hardwood floors, wood doors, a basement, and a working well. What started as a small backyard operation soon grew into the Sulphur Springs Coca-Cola Bottling Company, a business that employed hundreds of locals and lasted for a century.

Behind it stands a smaller outbuilding, believed to have been Mitchell’s early “soda lab.” Mitchell lived in the main house until his death in 1937, and his family continued to occupy it until the mid-20th century.

In 1926, the bottling company was sold to the McGrede and Ashcroft families, who rebranded it as the Sulphur Springs Coca-Cola Bottling Company. They operated it into a second generation, all the way to the early 2000s.

Since 2021, the property has been operating as an Airbnb under the name Historic Mitchell House.

While it is widely recognized by locals, the property does not currently hold a Texas Historical Marker. More of its story is documented on HistoricMitchellHouse.com, and additional historic news clippings can be found on the home’s Instagram page.
